How we choose products

Every product we mention has to earn its place in a small home. We look at footprint, how the piece transforms or stores, build quality, safety and installation requirements, and value at its price. Each guide includes budget, mid-range and premium options, because good design shouldn't depend on budget.

We recommend what we would put in a right-sized home, whether or not it pays us. Some of our favorite picks earn us nothing. Brands cannot pay to be included, and commissions never change what we recommend or how we rank it. We do not claim to have tested products unless an article explicitly says so. Specifications and prices change, so please check the current listing and the manufacturer's installation requirements before you buy.

Articles provide general design information. Building requirements, accessibility needs, installation methods and product specifications vary. Confirm project-specific decisions with your local building department, a qualified designer or installer, and the relevant manufacturer.

Contact and privacy

When you follow a product link to a retailer, that retailer or its affiliate network may use cookies to record that you came from our site. Retailer websites are subject to their own privacy policies.

The online life audit runs in your browser. Its answers and feedback are not submitted to us or saved; use the print option to keep your plan. The contact form stores your name, email, topic, and message in a private site inbox so we can respond. Resend processes these details to deliver an email notification to our team. We also use a daily-changing fingerprint of the network address to limit form spam. Please do not send sensitive personal information. Hosting infrastructure may process technical request information to serve and protect the site. Lasso’s affiliate script loads from js.codedrink.com. We also load the Skimlinks affiliate script from s.skimresources.com. The homepage also loads an Impact script from utt.impactcdn.com for affiliate verification, link transformation, and impression tracking. These services may process device, request, and link-interaction information. Third-party links and services are subject to their own privacy policies.
